Het werk van Nikolaj laat zich vooral lezen als abstracte vertellingen dan wel voorstellingen, die merendeels poëtisch van sfeer zijn. De ene keer op de voorgrond, dan weer naar de achtergrond; maar wel altijd ruimte latend voor interpretaties. In die abstracties is ook weer een zekere mate van herkenbaarheid zichtbaar. Zijn werk heeft een grote gelaagdheid, zowel in kleur, materie als in de verbeelding. Nikolaj heeft een fascinatie voor structuren en texturen, die door de specifieke betekenisverlening een nieuwe werkelijkheid vormt; vaak in een voortdurende beweging, doch ook wel weer verstild. De basis van z’n schilderijen is veelal eenruimtelijk kader waarbinnen de voorstelling plaatst vindt.
